Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis is excessive and abnormal sweating that is not related to heat or exercise. Hyperhidrosis can disrupt normal daily activities and is known to cause embarrassment and social anxiety.
Hyperhidrosis treatment is available. The FDA has approved Botulinum toxin A
(Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeaveau®) to treat primary axillary hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating of the underarms for patients who cannot find relief using antiperspirants.
Botulinum toxin A is a purified protein found in nature and can temporarily block the secretion of the chemical responsible for triggering the body’s sweat glands. By blocking this chemical, botulinum toxin, A turns off sweating in the areas where it is injected. Injections are shallow and just below the skin’s surface.
Studies on Botulinum toxin A show injections can reduce underarm sweating by 82% to 87%. Results are noticeable about 4 days after treatment, and full effects can be felt and seen within two weeks. Sweating relief generally lasts from 4 to 12 months, and some studies have found botulinum toxin A underarm injections can last up to 14 months. Studies have shown additional treatments are safe and effective, resulting in a better quality of life.
Botulinum toxin A can also be used in the hands to stop hyperhidrosis. Injections in hand can be painful. Analgesics are used to help decrease pain and discomfort.
