Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure treating uncomplicated spider veins and uncomplicated reticular veins. These veins are small blood vessels most commonly seen on the thighs, above and below the knees, feet, and ankles. Spider veins and reticular veins can be caused by injury, sun damage, hormonal changes, or hereditary factors. There are multiple ways to treat them, yet sclerotherapy is the perfect solution to remove unwanted veins without invasive surgery or the need for an extended recovery period. A needle is used to inject a solution directly into the vein that causes the vein to collapse. The blood is rerouted to healthy veins, improving circulation and the appearance of the skin.
We can safely treat all uncomplicated spider or reticular veins at one appointment. The procedure is safe and effective, and discomfort is minimal. The completion time of the procedure depends on the area being treated and may be discussed during a consultation. Bruising may occur following the procedure, but it will subside on its own. Compression stockings are required after your treatment for at least two weeks. You might need additional treatments, which will be scheduled 6-12 weeks apart. The number of treatment sessions varies, but is based on the patient’s need, the number of spiders/reticular veins, and the formation of new spider/reticular veins.
